How to Get the Best Results When Designing Custom T-Shirts & Merch with AI
AI is Changing How People Design Merch
Artificial intelligence has made it easier than ever to turn an idea into artwork. Whether you're creating merch for your business, band, brewery, sports team, or special event, AI tools can help you brainstorm concepts and generate unique visuals in minutes.
At Hardboiled Inc., we've seen more customers using AI-generated artwork as the starting point for custom t-shirt & apparel projects, and when used properly, it can produce fantastic results.
Like any design tool, however, getting a great printed product depends on how the artwork is prepared before it goes to press.
Popular AI Design Tools
Today's most popular AI tools include:
- ChatGPT Image Generation
- DALL·E
- Midjourney
- Adobe Firefly
- Canva AI
- Ideogram
- Microsoft Designer
Each tool has strengths, but they all create raster images, which means some preparation may be required before printing.
AI Is Great For Ideas
One of AI's biggest strengths is helping you explore creative directions.
You can quickly generate:
- Vintage-inspired graphics
- Minimalist logos
- Retro typography
- Mascot illustrations
- Nature-inspired artwork
- Tour merchandise concepts
Instead of spending hours sketching ideas, you can generate multiple concepts in minutes and refine the ones you like best.
Start with a Clear Prompt
The better your prompt, the better your results.
Instead of asking:
"Make me a t-shirt with a bear."
Try something more specific like:
"Create a vintage-style screen print design featuring a black bear and pine trees using three colours with bold lines, suitable for printing on a dark green t-shirt."
The more specific you are about style, colours, subject matter, and intended use, the more useful the artwork will be. Ask for the design, not a mock up on a t-shirt.
Example Using The Above Prompts:
With the vague prompt you do get a cool design but it's not screen print friendly. With all the fine details and at the low resultion output it would be difficult to get a good result with a digital print.
With a more detailed prompt, AI can create a design that can be extracted more easily and designed better for screen printing.
Think Like a Screen Printer
AI can create beautiful images, but not every image is easy, or affordable, to print.
For the best results, ask AI for designs with:
- Bold shapes
- Clean outlines
- High contrast
- Limited colour palettes
- Transparent or simple backgrounds
- Large, readable text
These styles typically translate much better to custom apparel than highly detailed, photorealistic artwork.
Use the Highest Resolution Available
One of the biggest limitations of AI-generated artwork is image resolution.
Whenever possible:
- Download the highest-resolution version available.
- Avoid screenshots.
- If the platform offers an upscaling feature, use it before exporting.
Higher-resolution artwork gives your printer more flexibility and produces sharper results.
AI Doesn't Replace Good Design
AI is an amazing creative assistant, but it's not always perfect.
Take a few minutes to check for:
- Misspelled words
- Strange-looking hands or faces
- Extra fingers
- Uneven symmetry
- Missing details
- Awkward backgrounds
These small issues are common in AI-generated images and are much easier to fix before printing.
Choose the Right Printing Method
Different artwork works better with different decoration methods.
Screen Printing
Best for:
- Simple artwork
- Bold graphics
- Limited colours
- Large orders
DTG Printing
Perfect for:
- Full-colour artwork
- Gradients
- Painterly illustrations
- Small quantities
DTF Printing
Excellent for:
- Detailed graphics
- Bright colours
- Polyester apparel
- Small to medium runs
Embroidery
AI can even help create embroidery concepts, but embroidered logos generally need to be simplified before they're digitized. Learn more about our embroidery services and artwork requirements.
Common AI Mistakes
Avoid these common problems:
- Tiny details that disappear when printed
- Dozens of colours in a screen print design
- Low-resolution downloads
- AI-generated text with spelling mistakes
- Busy backgrounds that compete with the main design
- Tiny logos placed in oversized layouts
- A mock up with the design
Keeping your design clean and intentional will almost always produce better printed merchandise. Avoid t-shirt mock ups. We can work with designs that are on a solid or transparent back ground.
Don't Worry If Your Artwork Isn't Perfect
Many customers assume they need a perfectly finished file before contacting a printer.
That's not the case.
At Hardboiled Inc., we'll review your artwork before production and let you know if any adjustments are recommended. We can often help with sizing, colour recommendations, print method selection, and preparing your file for the best possible result.
Our goal is to make sure your finished apparel looks as good in real life as it does on your screen.
AI + Human Creativity Is the Best Combination
The most successful merchandise projects often combine the speed of AI with a little human refinement.
Use AI to generate ideas, explore styles, or create a starting point, then work with your printer to ensure the artwork is optimized for the chosen garment and printing method.
That combination often leads to better designs, smoother production, and higher-quality finished products.
Example:
AI Prompt: Create a premium screen print t-shirt graphic for a Toronto craft brewery. Feature a vintage-style raccoon holding a pint of beer while sitting on a whiskey barrel surrounded by hops and maple leaves. Use bold outlines, subtle halftones, distressed texture, and a limited 3-colour palette (cream, dark green, and copper). Design as a centered chest print with no mockup, transparent background, and vector-inspired illustration suitable for screen printing.
ChatGPT Creation
ChatGPT did an okay job at following the prompt, however it's not perfect. It acutally created a design that is 4 colours instead of 3. The output is also only 72 DPI when print ready artwork should be 300 DPI.
Print Ready
To make this design print ready, it needs to be converted to a higher resolution. By prompting ChatGPT to use bold lines, it's easier to get a good outcome with a vector conversion. Some details are lost however.
New Possibilities With AI
AI has opened exciting new possibilities for businesses, artists, bands, schools, and organizations creating custom merchandise.
Whether you're designing your first t-shirt or launching a full merch collection, AI can be a powerful creative tool, as long as the artwork is prepared with printing in mind.
If you're unsure whether your design is print-ready, we're always happy to take a look and offer advice before production begins.
