Direct-To-Garment Printing

Direct to Garment (DTG) is a digital printing technology that excels in reproducing photographs, gradients, and glow effects. DTG printing works best on 100% cotton t-shirts, but we can also use this method on blended garments, but the results can be less vivid or opaque.  Unfortunately DTG does not work with any kind of high polyester fabrics or any other material that is heat sensitive. Lastly if you need any inspiration for garment styles, printing options, or possible design ideas, give our Instagram a look where we have a bunch of previous client’s print projects highlighted.

Advantages of DTG Printing

The advantage of DTG printing when compared to screen printing is the faster turnaround time and lower set-up costs. DTG printing is a cost effective solution when printing low volume orders that contain a large number of different ink colours.

Disadvantages of DTG Printing

The disadvantages of DTG printing are that it’s not possible to precisely match Pantone PMS colours as would be done with screen printing. You see some variance between what you have in your digital file and the final product. At higher volumes it can be more expensive when compared with bulk screen printing pricing.

Technical Guidelines for DTG Printing

File Format

When sending in your art file for DTG printing please make sure that it has been saved in RGB colour formatting as as vector image or a pixel-based image at least 300dpi. Additionally if there are any transparent areas within your image please make sure that the file is saved as a transparent PNG.

Opacity and Gradients

Printing on darker garments will be more expensive with DTG printing due to the additional white under layer that is required. Additionally, please be aware that if there are any glowing, smokey, or otherwise transparent areas within your design that these may come out slightly different than expected due to this white underlay.

Size Restrictions

With DTG printing your design can be up to 14 inches wide by 20 inches long, however the maximum print size of whatever garment you are printing on also needs to be taken into account. Also, the larger the print the more expensive your order will be as DTG is partially priced based on total ink usage.

Pricing Guidelines for DTG Printing

PRICIER GARMENT

LARGE PRINT SIZE

MORE INK USED

= HIGHER PRICE

For DTG printing projects the customization cost will be based on a combination of the overall size and colours of your design. Bright images on darker fabric will always be a bit pricier than anything printed on a white garment. As a result of this we would need to see your design and desired garment style to generate accurate pricing information.
