Direct to Garment (DTG) is a new digital printing technology that excels in accurately reproducing photographic or gradient heavy designs onto a variety of garments. DTG printing works best on white, 100% cotton t-shirts but we can also use these method on darker garments and some promotional products. Unfortunately DTG does not work with any kind of high polyester fabrics or any other material that is heat sensitive.
ADVANTAGES OF DTG Printing
The advantage of Direct To Garment printing when compared to screen printing is the faster turnaround time and potentially lower set up costs. DTG printing is often a much more cost effective solution when printing low volume runs that contain a large number of different colours within the imprint design.
disADVANTAGES OF DTG Printing
The main disadvantages of DTG printing are that it’s not possible to precisely mix and match Pantone PMS colours as would be done ahead of time when screen printing. Additionally, although DTG may be good for reproducing highly detailed prints, at higher volumes it can quickly become much more expensive when compared with bulk screen printing pricing.
EXAMPLES OF dTG PRINTING
Technical guidelines for DTG PRINTING
When sending in your art file for DTG printing please make sure that it has been saved in CMYK colour formatting as well as at least 300dpi. Additionally if there are any transparent areas within your image please make sure that the file is saved as a transparent PNG.
With DTG printing your design can be up to 14 inches wide by 20 inches long, however the maximum print size of whatever garment you are printing on also needs to be taken into account.
Opacity and Gradients
Printing on darker garments will be more expensive with DTG printing due to the additional white under layer that is required. Additionally, please be aware that if there are any glowing, smokey, or otherwise transparent areas within your design that these may come out slightly different than expected due to this white underlay.
